Finding Greener Hotels

Posted 07/30/2010 3:51 PM

Corporate travel program managers want to include greener hotels in their travel programs. They also want their travelers to be able to compare hotels' environmental impact at the point-of-sale. The challenge is that today there is no industry standard - no way to compare hotels in an apples-to-apples way. But there are new solutions emerging that are starting to address these needs. These solutions create a standard and disclose the results so that a fair quantitative comparison can be made. By looking at both absolute impact as well as year-over-year progress, they promise to provide some very valuable information. Once these types of solutions capture a critical mass of hotels, travelers and travel managers will have the information they need to make educated decisions.

I heard from one of our clients at NBTA that they will be requiring all the hotels in their preferred corporate program to participate in the Green Hotels Global measurement and disclosure program. Green Hotel Global's approach is to measure all hotels using the same metrics and to publish key metrics that travel managers can compare side-by-side and apples-to-apples. Green Hotels Global is using the standards that are being developed by the US Federal Government for procurement of meetings and hotels. Their methodology used for carbon measurement follows the GHG Protocol of the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Frank, do you think these standards will be 'across the industry' standards? When do you think we will begin to hear more about their arrival?

I think many business travelers (besides their company's program managers) will be more than ready for greening standards. But I hope they will be strict enough to really make a difference for the traveler.

Many of these travelers are already making huge steps in greening their homes and their businesses, now if the industry would follow suit.

The comparisons should be of great interest too. Thanks for the info.
