Cutting travel during periods of declining sales is prudent management. It is a relatively easy cost category to lever downwards, delivers almost immediate results to the bottom line, and is generally more humane than instituting layoffs.

Given those cost advantages and limited information historically on the consequences of travel cut-backs, business travel in the past two years has been cut dramatically in many firms. However, businesses should ask: how much is too much?
